The system will be launched next month and will enable schools to see instantly which tour operators are refusing to adhere to government guidelines on safety.
The news comes after the House of Commons education and skills select committee expressed concern at the decline of school trips and urged the Government to take radical action to reverse the trend.
The accreditation system has been developed by the School Travel Forum, a grouping of the main school tour operators in the UK, in consultation with the major teaching unions.
Under the system, membership of this group will only be awarded to tour operators that reach a required safety standard, based on existing Department for Education and Skills guidelines. All operators will have to undergo annual external verification to retain their membership.
