The council last week ordered the schools to release the funds afterjudging they were not being held for "reasonable purposes". But schoolsreacted furiously with some claiming that it would lead toredundancies.
This week, director of children's services Lisa Christensen admittedthat the process had been flawed and promised to give schools theopportunity to resubmit the information on which the council made itsoriginal decision.
She said: "We're sorry for the confusion and upset. Some headteachersfound the process and advice unclear. The final outcome may still see aproportion of balances being redistributed, but this is such animportant issue we must make sure everyone has confidence in theresults."
