Education News: School uniform - Leeds ditches plan to cut cashgrants

Leeds City Council has ditched a controversial plan to cut school uniform grants, following criticism from child poverty campaigners.

Councillors had planned to cut back school uniform allowances so thatthey were only available for children starting in reception or Year 7(Children Now, 19-25 July). The move would have saved the councilthousands of pounds.

But the decision was reversed at a full council meeting last week.Council leader Mark Harris said that 350,000 would be found toretain the scheme by savings in councillors' hospitality and publicrelations.

The Child Poverty Action Group welcomed the u-turn. Chief executive KateGreen said: "We're delighted that the council has decided to reverse itsoriginal decision. It will be a relief to thousands of parents who wouldotherwise have had no help with school uniform costs this year."
