The Child Poverty Action Group said the move by Leeds City Council wouldhit the poorest families in the city. School uniform allowances in Leedswill now only be available for children starting in reception and Year7. It means that only 4,500 pupils will automatically qualify this yearcompared to 24,000 last year. The move is expected to save the council405,000 a year.
Kate Green, chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, said:"Many parents on tight budgets will now struggle to buy new uniforms fortheir children. We hope the council will think again."
Leeds City Council stressed that it was still committing more money toschool uniform allowances than many other local authorities.
