Education News: School funding - Norfolk under fire for 3.5mclawback

Norfolk County Council has come under fierce attack from some of its schools for demanding that they hand back a total of 3.5m.

The council has ordered 190 schools to release funds after judging thatthey were not being held for "reasonable purposes". The money is nowbeing reallocated with a share given to every school in the localauthority.

Many schools have received significant new funds as a result of theredistribution.

But others are furious after suffering significant deficits and Unisonhas expressed concern that these schools will be forced to makeredundancies.

George White Middle School in Norwich handed 125,000 over to thecouncil but only received 8,000 back. Head teacher Paul Stanleytold Children Now: "It's quite a mess. We had no warning whatsoever andI think that's what's made myself and other heads particularly cross.We've now revised the budget and we're going to have to lose a member ofstaff next year."
