Education News: School food - Mixed reception for nutritious meals

The number of pupils eating school meals fell in almost a third of secondary schools thanks to the Government's nutrition guidelines, a poll of head teachers revealed last week.

But a third of the 280 heads questioned by the School Food Trust saidmore children were eating meals.

Michael Nelson, the trust's head of research, said the findingsconfounded critics who said the standards would be a disaster. "Theschool food service has risen to the challenge," he said. "However, weare not complacent; we know there are schools and local authoritiesfinding it more difficult than others."

A spokeswoman for the Local Authority Caterers' Association said theorganisation would be interested to see how the findings compared withits own survey of school catering managers.
