MPs last week quizzed David Bell, the permanent secretary of theDepartment for Education and Skills, about the plan. He said Brown'sgoal was a "fair aspiration" but admitted no specific work on it wasunder way.
"The department's future plans are tied up with the comprehensivespending review," he told MPs on the Education and Skills SelectCommittee.
In last March's budget, Brown said his objective was to bring spendingon state pupils up to the level in private schools (Children Now, 29March-4 April).
