3 mins read
The spending review is where Chancellor Gordon Brown will set out the Government's funding plans for the next three years. As the children's sector steps up its lobbying ahead of next year's review, David Singleton reveals the key battlegrounds.

The outcome of the next spending review will not be revealed until 2007but, behind the scenes, significant preparation is already under way.Government departments are busy identifying the key areas where theywant more funding from the Treasury. And campaigners are doing theirbest to influence that process.

Over the next few months, various parts of the children's sector willcontinue to apply pressure on ministers to maintain the high level ofinvestment currently going into children's services.

At the moment it is all to play for. With the next spending reviewlikely to lay the foundations for a Gordon Brown premiership, earlyyears could be a big winner in 2007. But the current economic climatemeans the next review is likely to be less generous than in previousyears and the children's sector cannot expect to see the large gains ofthe last two reviews repeated across the board.
