In his 2006 budget, Brown, then Chancellor, said the government was spending £5,000 per pupil per year but this still stood "in marked contrast to average spending per pupil in the private sector of £8,000 a year".
Brown went on to say his long-term goal was to match private school spending. But the latest Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) figures suggest this is a long way from being reached.
The figures estimate £5,350 was spent per pupil in 2007/08, up from £5,070 in 2006/07. However, while spending is set to increase in the next few years, the DCSF only expects to reach £5,910 per pupil by 2010/11, well below the £8,000 per pupil figure private schools were spending back in 2006.
