Work Wise: Numbers game - Youth custody in Scotland

1 min read
The number of secure accommodation unit places for young people in Scotland has risen for the third year in a row.

Figures released by the Scottish Government show there were 130 places for young people in secure accommodation on 31 March 2008. This figure is up from 112 on this date in 2007 and 86 in 2000.

The figure of 130, however, ignores the temporary closure of the St Mary's Kenmure unit in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, in late March after a number of young people rioted and escaped. The rise in the number of places is partly the result of a new unit opening in Paisley in July 2007.

The rise in places is also reflected in increased staffing levels. In 2007/08, 662 people worked in secure accommodation - up from 596 the year before. However, the percentage of posts left vacant increased from 2.9 to 7.2 per cent in the same period.
