There were more than 480,000 emergency hospital admissions of children and young people aged from birth to 19 from A&E departments in 2006/07, compared with 360,000 in 1996/97. Emergency admissions of birth to 19-year-olds from GP surgeries fell by 16 per cent during the same period, which partially accounts for the increase in admissions from A&E. However, emergency admissions in total for birth to 19-year-olds - from A&E, GP surgeries and all other routes - still rose by 18 per cent to over 830,000.
Jo Webber, deputy policy director at the NHS Confederation, said: "We expect polyclinics, extended GP hours and walk-in centres to lower the numbers of emergency admissions in the coming years."
