Work Wise: Numbers game - Independent education

The percentage of children aged between five- and 10-years-old who attend independent schools across England has remained largely static for the past three years at 5.5 per cent in 2004 and 5.6 per cent in 2007.

According to statistics released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the local authority with the highest number of five- to 10-year-olds in such education is the City of London, with 69.1 per cent in 2007.

In outer London, Richmond has the highest rate at 24.2 per cent in 2007. Outside of London, Surrey has the highest number of five to 10-year-olds attending independent schools at 18 per cent in 2007.

In Windsor and Maidenhead, 17.7 per cent of the same age group attend independent schools in 2007.

Rutland comes in at third highest outside of London, with 11.8 per cent of five- to 10-year-olds in independent schools in 2007, a rise from 10.6 in 2004.
