Parents are still relying on private nurseries for childcare, despite the government's push to provide more affordable places in the state sector.
Statistics released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families revealed 39 per cent of three- and four-year-olds are being sent to private and voluntary providers. This figure has stayed the same since 2004.
Figures from the government report Provision for Children Under the Age of Five in England: January 2008 show that in 2004, 59 per cent of children aged three and four were attending maintained nursery schools and nurseries in primary schools. This year, the number has dropped slightly to 57 per cent.
