Education News: Nutrition - Welsh schools ban food additives

Conwy County Council is banning additives and colourings from school meals in its 63 primary schools following a successful pilot project.

Preliminary results from Ysgol Deganwy Primary School show the move has led to improved behaviour and reduced hyperactivity in children. Uptake for school meals has also increased.

The council is working with suppliers and distributors to find products and ingredients that are free from flavourings and artificial colourings. "We have been encouraged by the positive response from major manufacturers, who have been prepared to modify and revise ingredients and recipes to meet our requirements," said Carol Davies, catering manager at Conwy Council.

Davies said she had prepared healthier menus for the 5,000 pupils eating school meals that met strict financial targets and still appealed to the children.
