The report highlighted the success of nurseries in implementing nutritional standards, which became compulsory in 2001, while warning that schools often lacked coherent food policies. Teachers also often lacked up-to-date knowledge, resulting in children receiving mixed messages about healthy eating.
Charlie Powell, of food charity Sustain, said nurseries had more time to give children a hands-on approach to food. He said in primary schools the subject was encompassed within design and technology, which often meant pupils focused more on commercial aspects such as "designing pizza boxes".
