Education News: looked-after children - Charity demands specificteachers

A leading children's charity has said that schools should be legally required to appoint a designated teacher for looked-after children.

Barnardo's made the recommendation in a major report on the educationalexperiences of looked-after children. The report says that it is vitalfor looked-after children to know who "can make things happen" if thereare issues or problems.

A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said: "We all recognisethat children in care often underachieve significantly. That's why wewill shortly be publishing a green paper, which will include a widepackage of reforms."
