Education News: Literacy - Reading project praised in report

The Government's flagship reading scheme for children from poor backgrounds has been lauded in a new report.

Research by academics at the University of London found that most ofthose receiving special tuition under the scheme caught up with theirpeers, and some children made four times the normal rate ofprogress.

The Every Child a Reader initiative places specialist literacy teachersin schools to provide intensive one-to-one support and targets the mostdifficult-to-reach children in disadvantaged areas.

In total, 58 per cent of the children involved last year were on freeschool meals, compared to a national average of 17 per cent. Two-thirdswere boys.

Director of Every Child A Reader Jean Gross said: "The initiative hasshown that schools can raise their aspirations for the lowest-attainingchildren, and begin to break the link between poverty, gender andattainment."
