Project Every Child a Reader/Reading Recovery
Funding The programme costs £2,500 per child
Purpose To reduce the gap in achievement between vulnerable children and their peers through learning to read
Background Children with poor literacy skills are at a disadvantage that can have a huge impact on their success and happiness in later life. Nottinghamshire County Council was keen to narrow the gap in achievement between some of its most vulnerable children and their peers so embraced the government-backed Every Child a Reader scheme.
Government funding for the scheme was subsumed into the national schools budget – but the council decided to maintain funding for its version of the project, now in its fifth year.
Action Every Child a Reader uses the Reading Recovery programme, in which teachers are trained to become “literacy experts” to work intensively with children who need extra help, as well as support their school to develop strategies to boost literacy.
