Education News: Literacy - Gaps in support must be closed

The Commons education and skills select committee has called on the Government to develop better literacy programmes for children with learning difficulties and disabilities.

The committee's report on teaching children to read said the one in five children who cannot read properly at the age of 11 was "unacceptably high" and demanded an urgent review of the National Literacy Strategy.

It added: "Government must ensure suitable programmes are available to all children who require intensive support, and that they are delivered by highly qualified professionals."
