Education News: Young offenders - Prison education needs to improve

Prison education for young people could still be better despite recent improvements, according to evidence given to the House of Commons' education and skills select committee.

Paul Holmes MP, Liberal Democrat member of the committee, which is conducting an inquiry into prison education, said: "The major thing was a lack of priority and coherence in the system for education." In its evidence to the committee, the Youth Justice Board said per capita funding for young offenders' education had trebled since 2002. But it admitted there were variations between establishments, and it also highlighted a lack of teachers with specific skills.
