The guidance is being finalised by officials and is likely to bepublished in the next few weeks. A source involved with drafting theguidance told Children Now: "It is intended to clarify what at themoment is quite a muddy area."
The DfES has pledged 680m over the next two years to kickstartextended schools, but it is keen for most activities to becomeself-funding in the long-term. The guidance is expected to say thatwhile schools may find it difficult to introduce charges, they arenecessary. An early draft of the guidance stated: "You may charge forsome study support activities, but not for offers relating directly to achild's attainment, such as targeted literacy support."
