In a personal letter to local authority chief executives, educationsecretary Ruth Kelly attempted to allay fears about her plans to set uptrust schools with the power to set their own admissions policies.
The letter, sent out last week and leaked to Children Now, begins: "I amwriting to you about our recent white paper ... as you may have pickedup the wrong impression from the press about the role we envisage forlocal authorities in the future."
It goes on to insist that trust schools will not be at odds with localauthority admission arrangements. It reads: "Any approach adopted by aself-governing school must comply with the law on admissions ...Self-governing and trust schools will also be obliged to take their fairshare of special educational needs pupils, and we will soon act to makethe same principles apply for looked-after children."
