48% of looked-after children obtained at least five GCSEs at A to G grade in 2003 (36.8 per cent in England)

0.06% of primary school pupils permanently excluded from school in 2002/03 (0.03 per cent in England)

6.5% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2003 (13.9 per cent in England)

74% of pupils achieved Level 5 or above at Key Stage 3 science in 2002/03 (68 per cent in England)

Jon Rose, education director of Somerset LEA, said: "Somerset is often thought of as a good place to go on holiday, but we also have problems of rural isolation and urban deprivation. Encouraging inter-school and agency collaboration on a range of learning and inclusion projects therefore forms a strong feature of Somerset education."
