16.5% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2004 (14.2 per cent in England)

13.5% of primary pupils did not have English as their first language in January 2004 (11 per cent in England)

1.9% of primary pupils with special educational needs statements in January 2004 (1.6 per cent in England)

0.27% of the school population excluded permanently in 2002/03 (0.12 per cent in England)

The last inspection of Derby local education authority, in September 2002, found it provided strong support for minority ethnic and Traveller children, and focused on schools in the greatest need. It was also praised for its support for welfare and child protection in schools.
