20.2% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2004 (14.2 per cent in England)

18.1% of primary pupils did not have English as their first language in January 2004 (11 per cent in England)

1.6% of primary pupils with special educational needs statements in January 2004 (1.6 per cent in England)

0.17% of the school population excluded permanently in 2002/03 (0.12 per cent in England)

The council's director of children's services, Terry Piggott, said Rochdale had seen improved attendance figures and exam results. He added: "We aim to work in partnership with all involved in education to promote effective learning and raise achievement."
