16.5% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2004 (14.2 per cent in England)

- 16.3% of primary pupils did not have English as their first language in January 2004 (11 per cent in England)

- 1.5% of primary pupils with special educational needs statements in January 2004 (1.6 per cent in England)

- 0.15% of the school population excluded permanently in 2002/03 (0.12 per cent in England)

Ofsted's last inspection report on Bolton local education authority, published in May 2004, said it paid attention to the individual requirements of pupils with special educational needs. However, it said the council had not clearly communicated its special educational needs strategy to schools. Bolton was rated as a satisfactory local education authority.
