13.2% of nursery and primary school pupils taking free school meals in January 2004 (14.2 per cent in England)

5% of primary pupils did not have English as their first language in January 2004 (11 per cent in England)

1.5% of primary pupils with special educational needs statements in January 2004 (1.6 per cent in England)

0.06% of the school population excluded permanently in 2002/03 (0.12 per cent in England)

David Hawker, director of children's services at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: "Our key challenge over the next year or so is to link schools effectively into our children's trust by taking forward a comprehensive extended schools/healthy schools strategy across the city. Schools are very enthusiastic about it, but need us to be creative with the resources."
