Education News: Disability - Young people miss out on allowance

More than one in 10 of 16-year-olds in full-time education with special needs and a disability have not heard of the Government's educational maintenance allowance, aimed at helping young people from poorer families stay in education.

The findings are included in a series of reports for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), which look at awareness of the allowance in pilot areas before the scheme was rolled out nationally last September.

One report on young people not in education, employment or training in the pilot areas said the diversity of these people needed to be recognised to enable policies to be tailored to particular needs.

The DfES said 275,292 people had received payments by late March. Around 50 per cent of eligible 16-year-olds had applied by last September.
