The Government announced in April (News, 21-27 April) that from September, all 16-year-olds from households with incomes of less than 30,000 will be eligible for a means-tested allowance of between 10 and 30 a week.
It will be paid directly into their bank accounts in return for strong attendance and commitment.
A DfES spokeswoman said: "We are very pleased with the rate at which applications are coming in - applications received are now over 125,000."
