1 min read
The Government has been accused of performing a u-turn over the amount of money it will spend on raising the achievement of ethnic minority pupils.

The Department for Education and Skills has come under attack fromcampaigners following the publication last month of new allocations forthe Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant (Emag).

Ministers have agreed to give local authorities a total of 174min 2006/07 and 179m in 2007/08. This is an increase on thecurrent level of 169m but is significantly less than localauthorities had been expecting to receive.

The National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum saidthat the new figure was well below what the DfES has suggested it wouldbe. A spokeswoman said: "There are significant differences between thesefigures and the provisional figures announced last year. Funding for2006/07 has been cut by 5m and for 2007/08 by 10m."
