Education News: Child Protection - Pupil safeguarding duty now in force

Staff could be prosecuted if they don't comply with a new law that came into force this month.

The duty for schools to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, part of the Education Act 2002, is now law and will enable local education authorities and governing bodies to consider disciplinary action against a member of staff who has not followed child protection procedures.

The Department for Education and Skills is due to issue guidance on the duty this week.
