EDUCATION NEWS: Bullying - Aberdeen Council faces legal battle

A landmark legal action could force Scottish local authorities to change the way they tackle bullying in schools.

Natalie King, 15, of Newmacher, Aberdeenshire, claims she has been bullied for nine years. In a Scottish first, she has been awarded legal aid to take Aberdeen City Council to sheriff court over the allegations.

Her lawyer, Cameron Fyfe of Glasgow-based solicitors Ross Harper, wants the case to be heard in Scotland's Court of Session because he believes it is of national significance.

Although King's family had approached the police and the education authority, nothing was done to prevent further bullying, said Fyfe.

The girl has not attended school since last summer because of the psychological effects of the bullying.

Aberdeen City Council said it would "vigorously defend" the case, particularly any allegations of staff negligence.
