Education News: Building schools for the future - Islington warnsof 47.5m shortfall

1 min read
The Government's plans to modernise schools could be hit by a serious funding shortfall, it emerged this week.

Children Now has learned that Islington Council will need another 47.5m to ensure that all of its secondary schools are rebuilt orupgraded in line with government plans.

Director of children's services Paul Curran said the extra money wasneeded to implement the Building Schools for the Future project. And hepredicted that the shortfall would be replicated in councils across thecountry.

He said: "At this stage we've got an annual revenue shortfall of 1.9m a year over the 25-year life of the programme.

"So if you add all that up there is more than a 40m gap betweenwhat we've been offered for the project and what we think it will cost.It wouldn't be right to say that it's completely unexpected or unusualbut it's still a concern."
