Conservatives attack Building Schools for the Future

1 min read Education
Two thirds of Labour's flagship rebuilding projects are behind schedule, the shadow minister for children said today.

Michael Gove said Labour are "failing to deliver" the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme which he said was "woefully behind schedule". The Conservatives said 70 per cent of second wave projects have also been delayed, as well as 42 per cent of third wave projects.

It has emerged that only 37 schools will be completed by the end of 2008 compared to the 200 schools originally scheduled for completion.
Gove said: "Billions of pounds are being spent but children and parents are not seeing the results."

Schools minister Jim Knight responded to the claim by attacking Conservative proposals to slash funds for the scheme.

He said: "While this government is committed to rebuilding or refurbishing every secondary school, the Tories have pledged to slash our school building programme by £4.5bn.

"This would mean cancelling one in seven future school building projects - a total of 360 schools. Instead of criticising the BSF programme Michael Gove should come clean about which schools would no longer be rebuilt if the Tories had their way."

The Department for Children Schools and Families say the BSF programme will be completed by 2020.
