School building programme hits further delays

1 min read Education
A flagship scheme to rebuild schools in England has slipped further behind schedule.

The £45bn Building Schools for the Future project, which was announced in 2004, has so far only fully funded one school.

In response to a Parliamentary written question, schools minister Jim Knight has said a further 35 will be ready during 2008-09.

However this is lower than a previous aim of 50, and the Conservatives said it falls a long way short of the government's original plans.

Michael Gove, the shadow children's secretary, said the initial aim had been to rebuild every school in England by 2015.

This would cover around 3500 schools. But Knight's written answer suggested less than a 1000 will be ready by this time.

Despite this Knight said the scheme is progressing well.

Gove said: "Ministers don't seem able to handle a project of this magnitude. Billions of pounds are being spent but parents and children aren't seeing the results."
