A total of £2bn was allocated by the government to help rebuild between 100 and 300 of the country's most run-down schools under the Priority Schools Building Programme, but none of this has yet been spent.
The Department for Education (DfE) had said the successful projects would be announced in December, then on 16 January this year, Education Secretary Michael Gove told the House of Commons that "final decisions on each school in the programme will not be made until at least next month [February]".
The LGA claims that councils are now having to use their own resources to fix problems such as leaky roofs, inadequate toilet facilities and outdated security.
