Education News Briefs: Wales - Schools will offer free breakfasts

Primary school pupils in some of Wales's most deprived areas are to benefit from free healthy breakfasts, following the launch of a pilot project.

Nine local education authorities will take part in the first phase. The Welsh Assembly has allocated 1.5m for the academic year starting September 2004 and a further 3.5m for 2005/6.

Goetre Junior School in Merthyr Tydfil already runs a breakfast club.

John Bibby, the head teacher, said punctuality and attendance at his school had improved since the breakfast club was introduced, with 98 per cent of pupils arriving on time.
