Education News: Behaviour and truancy - DfES extends funds forsupport teams

The Department for Education and Skills will provide further funding for multi-agency teams set up to help children with behavioural and attendance problems.

Ministers have decided keep funding behaviour and education supportteams for another two years after existing funding runs out in 2006.

A report on the initiative, commissioned by the department, says: "Thefuture funding for the teams was unclear. It is now understood thatfunding will be made available until 2008, although it will be left tothe discretion of the local authority as to how they use thismoney."

The report says that the teams have had a positive impact on children inthe four main areas of attainment, attendance, behaviour andwellbeing.

The teams are being introduced in targeted areas as part of theGovernment's Behaviour Improvement Programme.
