Education News: Unauthorised absence - DfES figures show truancyrates rising

Truancy is still on the increase, according to the latest figures from the Department for Education and Skills.

The figures show unauthorised absence in schools rose from 0.78 per centof half days missed last year to 0.79 per cent this year. But there wassome good news for ministers since the overall rise disguised a slightdrop in rates at secondary schools.

Schools minister Jim Knight vowed to keep up the pressure on schools andlocal authorities to improve attendance. He also revealed that thedepartment's controversial fast-track targeting of parents of persistenttruants in 200 schools had led to a 27 per cent drop in the number ofpersistent truants across these schools.
