Research published at The Education Network conference last week shows that in Lambeth primary pupils who change schools frequently achieve, on average, 20 per cent lower than their peers. At GCSE, results are 25 per cent lower.
Cathy Twist, assistant director at Lambeth's education department, said: "Additional targeted funding is needed to deal with the admissions and pastoral needs of pupils. Schools need to have in place detailed procedures for inductions and assessments of pupils who join at non-standard times."
This includes looked-after and asylum-seeking children as well as excluded pupils.
