Education: Fears of exclusion in Brown speech

The Association of Directors of Children's Services is seeking Government assurances that its members will be involved in the proposed National Council for Educational Excellence.

Last week, Gordon Brown announced plans to launch the council, whichwill advise ministers on education and promote high standards andinnovation in schools.

But while Brown said teachers, parents, charities and business leaderswould be involved, the association is concerned its members were notmentioned.

In a letter to education secretary Alan Johnson, the association's jointpresident John Freeman said: "I noticed neither local authorities nordirectors of children's services featured in the speech." He added it isvital that its members are not left out.

The Department for Education and Skills said Johnson would respond "indue course".
