Children's services: Hughes and Brown top 'allies' in service directors' opinion poll

Children's services directors believe that children's minister Beverley Hughes and Chancellor Gordon Brown are their biggest allies in Government.

On the other hand, junior schools minister Lord Andrew Adonis is seen asa major threat to the children's agenda.

Children Now asked 20 directors across England whether certainGovernment ministers were helping or hindering the delivery of the EveryChild Matters agenda at local level. Directors ranked the sevenministers on a scale of one (hindering a lot) to 10 (helping a lot).

Hughes got the highest rating, with four directors awarding the topscore of 10. "She is bright, she's got real commitment to children andyoung people and she has a background in the field so she understandsthe issues," enthused one director. "Whatever she talks about, childrenare at the heart of what she says," said another.
