Speaking at the North of England Education Conference last week, Knight said it was crucial that schools engage with employers beyond just the provision of work experience.
"Sharing business skills and expertise with local schools helps to promote the value of enterprise and prepares young people effectively for the world of work," he said.
Knight's comments were echoed by Lord Bill Morris, former general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union.
He said: "Partnership is key. We need an integrated approach among schools, training organisations, employers and government so the UK can compete effectively."
He added senior education managers needed to develop a moreemployer-focused approach in the design and delivery of courses.
