Education Bill: Young carers set to get school support

Young carers could have a designated teacher to care for their needs and support them at school, under a proposed change to the Education Bill.

The amendment brought by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats statesthat school "head teachers should nominate a staff member who shall beresponsible for identifying young carers, assessing their educationalneeds and promoting their wellbeing".

If accepted, the change would require education watchdog Ofsted toensure this is happening when it inspects schools.

Alex Fox, head of young carer development at The Princess Royal Trustfor Carers, said: "The amendment reflects current Department forEducation and Skills' guidance so we are hoping that it will get supportfrom the Government as well. We have certainly had a lot of interestfrom Labour Party backbenchers."

A significant minority of young carers supported by the trust are"serial truants" who have all but dropped out of education.
