Less than 30 days later this proposal, voted by the children's sector asone of their top 10 most-wanted policy changes, has become a reality.Bringing together health, child poverty and - as Children Now flagged upback in February - youth justice in one department, along witheducation, childcare and the rest, clears the way for some of the othermanifesto proposals.
Many of these require cross-Governmental working, such as a joint youthdrugs and alcohol strategy, and better resettlement services for youngoffenders leaving custody, so putting children's health and youthjustice in one department is a good first step. The fact that the newdepartment is under the aegis of Ed Balls, who has already proved he candrive policy change for children across departments with the EveryDisabled Child Matters reforms, gives even more hope to the sector.
