EDITORIAL: The DIY approach can sometimes work best

As this week's cover feature explains (see p14), residents on five estates in the south of Sunderland exist in a funding black hole, purely because they happen to have some relatively affluent areas nearby.

Consequently, there was no provision for young people on the Doxford Park, Moorside, Hall Farm, Chapelgarth and Mill Hill estates, in contrast with similar areas of Sunderland that qualified for New Deal for Communities funding.

Two years ago, exhortations to local people by Peter Cooper, the strategy co-ordinator at the city's Youth Development Group, were initially met with scepticism. But the three-year action plan he set in motion to develop youth services in the area is bearing fruit, thanks mainly to the efforts of young people.
