The work that people such as youth worker Donna Jones and her young cohorts Samantha Hague and Gemma Scott have been doing brings home the importance of both youth work and volunteering (see Project notes, p4). They all participate in the Manor Young People's Health Project in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, which was named Most Exceptional Youth Activity at the awards for its work in bringing generations together.
Donna explains that young people on the Manor estate in Sheffield now follow volunteers like Samantha and Gemma around as if they were modern reincarnations of the Pied Piper.
The girls are doing their bit to improve the image of this much-maligned estate, in a bid to make lives better for all residents, young and old. And they are both now training to be youth workers.
