A feasibility study, jointly run by mental health charity Mencap and the Government, is looking at the best way to develop a centre to help disabled children aged up to five and their families access the best care.
At a consultation event organised by Mencap last month, parents, practitioners, researchers and representatives from other interest groups concluded that a national centre could provide a one-stop shop for accurate information, promote best practice, and help even out inequalities in the type of care available across the country.
A Mencap spokeswoman said that while school-age children with disabilities did have access to a range of support, there was "nothing out there" for pre-school children in some areas.
