It wants 30,000 more children in England to reach "a good level ofdevelopment" by the time they go to school at the age of five. And itwants to see the biggest improvements in the most deprivedcommunities.
"By 2008 we want to have seen improvements across the country inchildren's readiness for school at age five," said education secretaryRuth Kelly at a Institute for Public Policy Research conference lastweek.
She said the Government wanted to boost the number of five-year-oldsachieving a good level of development from 48 to 53 per cent by2008.
This would mean more children doing well in two areas of learning -communication, language and literacy skills and personal, social andemotional development, said the Department for Education and Skills.
