Figures for 2005 showed 16 per cent of children struggled to link soundsand letters, while 21 per cent were doing better, but were not "workingsecurely" after a year of primary school.
Ten per cent struggled with simple calculations while 15 per cent wereunable to complete writing tests. Girls outperformed boys, by 17 percent in writing assessments, and 10 per cent on communication-relatedassessments.
The figures, released by the Department of Education And Skills lastweek, outlined the performance of children in reception class atfoundation stage.
This was introduced in 2000 for children aged three to five in allschools with nursery and reception classes and for early years settingsreceiving nursery education grant funding. A spokesman from the DfESsaid: "The early learning goals were always intended to bechallenging."
